Darkening beneath the eyes — assessed to find the cause before treatment.
Dark circles under the eyes are one of the most common cosmetic concerns, and one of the most misunderstood. They can be caused by pigmentation, by thin skin showing the vessels beneath, by shadowing from a hollow, or a mix of all three. Because the cause varies so much from person to person, dark circles are always assessed in person at Feonix Aesthetics in Coventry before any treatment is suggested.
Book a Consultation“Dark circles” is a general term for a darker appearance in the under-eye area. In reality there are several distinct causes that can look similar: true pigmentation (extra melanin in the skin), a vascular appearance (thin skin allowing the bluish tone of underlying blood vessels to show through), and shadowing created by an under-eye hollow. Many people have a combination.
Identifying which of these is driving your dark circles is the single most important step, because each responds to a different approach. A treatment aimed at pigment will do little for a shadow caused by a hollow, and vice versa.
Pigment-type dark circles are influenced by genetics and are more common in richer skin tones; they can also follow rubbing, eczema or sun exposure. Vascular-type darkening is down to naturally thin, translucent under-eye skin and can be made more obvious by tiredness, dehydration and age. Shadow-type circles come from the structure of the face — a tear-trough hollow catching the light. Lifestyle factors such as poor sleep, dehydration and fluid retention tend to make any of these look worse temporarily.
Treatment follows the cause. For under-eye skin quality and pigment, polynucleotides can improve the thickness and health of the delicate skin, which often helps the area look fresher and less shadowed over a course. Where surface pigmentation is a genuine factor, a gentle, considered approach such as LaseMD Ultra may be discussed after assessment — the under-eye is delicate and only appropriate, well-judged options are used.
Where the darkening is largely a shadow from a hollow, the plan shifts towards the tear-trough approaches described on our under-eye hollows page. Honest expectation-setting is part of good care here: dark circles are often improved and softened rather than erased, particularly where genetics and skin thinness are involved.
Improves the quality, thickness and hydration of thin under-eye skin, helping the area look fresher and less shadowed over a course.
SUPPORTINGA gentle non-ablative laser that can help with genuine surface pigmentation and tone, used carefully and only where suitable after assessment.
Several things, and often more than one at once: true pigmentation (extra melanin), a vascular look (thin skin showing the vessels beneath), and shadowing from an under-eye hollow. Tiredness, dehydration and fluid retention make any of them look worse. Working out the main cause is the first job at your consultation, because each responds to a different treatment.
It is more realistic to think in terms of meaningful improvement than complete removal, especially where genetics and naturally thin skin are involved. A good assessment sets honest expectations and targets the specific cause, which gives the best chance of a fresher, brighter under-eye.
Home skincare and good sleep, hydration and sun protection help and are always worth doing, but they have limits — particularly for structural or vascular dark circles. Clinical treatment is chosen based on the underlying cause identified at assessment.
