Fungal nail infections are common and, while not usually dangerous, they can be persistent, uncomfortable and self-conscious-making. They rarely resolve without treatment.
Nail fungus thrives in warm, damp conditions — inside shoes, around pools and changing rooms — and often enters through small cracks in the nail or surrounding skin. It is more likely with age, reduced circulation, previous nail damage, and in people who use communal wet areas. It can also spread between nails. Because it lives within and under the nail, it is difficult to reach with surface products alone.
