A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) causes nails to become thickened, discoloured, brittle or distorted, most often on the toes. It is common, can be stubborn, and tends not to clear on its own. What it is
Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail, most common on the toenails. It typically causes the nail to thicken, turn yellow, white or brown, become brittle or crumbly, and sometimes lift or distort in shape. It usually develops slowly and can affect one nail or several.
Fungal nail infections are common and, while not usually dangerous, they can be persistent, uncomfortable and self-conscious-making. They rarely resolve without treatment.

Why it happens
Nail fungus thrives in warm, damp conditions — inside shoes, around pools and changing rooms — and often enters through small cracks in the nail or surrounding skin. It is more likely with age, reduced circulation, previous nail damage, and in people who use communal wet areas. It can also spread between nails. Because it lives within and under the nail, it is difficult to reach with surface products alone.

Common questions about fungal nail infection
Will the nail look normal again straight away?
No — nails grow slowly, so improvement shows as the healthy nail grows through over several months rather than immediately. Patience is part of fungal nail treatment, and we set that expectation clearly at your assessment.
Why won't my fungal nail clear on its own?
The fungus lives within and under the nail, where surface products struggle to reach, so these infections rarely resolve without treatment and can be stubborn. Assessment and appropriate treatment give the best chance of improvement.
Can it come back?
It can, particularly if the conditions that caused it persist. We advise on simple steps to reduce the chance of reinfection alongside treatment. More than one session is sometimes needed.
