Weak or Undefined Jawline

A soft jawline or receding chin — defined with structural filler where suitable.

A weak or undefined jawline describes a jawline that lacks a clear edge, or a chin that sits back from the rest of the profile. It is often down to natural bone structure, but can also develop as the face changes with age. At Feonix Aesthetics in Coventry, we assess your facial proportions and, where it is suitable, use Chin & Jawline Sculpting with dermal filler to add structure.

What it is

Definition along the jaw comes from the shape of the jawbone and chin and from how the soft tissue sits over them. A jawline can look undefined when the chin is small or set back, when the angle of the jaw is soft, or when the transition from jaw to neck is blurred. In profile, a receding chin can make the nose look more prominent and the lower face less balanced.

This is different from jowls, where skin and tissue sag below the jawline with age, from a wide jaw caused by large chewing muscles, and from fullness under the chin. Each of those has its own page, because the cause and the approach are different.

More about Weak or Undefined Jawline

Why it happens

Much of it is inherited: chin projection and jaw shape vary naturally between people. With age, the jawbone gradually loses some volume and the skin and soft tissue loosen, which can soften a jawline that was once well defined. Weight changes and posture can also affect how defined the jaw looks.

How we assess it at Feonix

At your consultation we look at your profile and facial proportions, the shape of your chin and jaw, your skin quality, and whether laxity or fullness under the chin is part of the picture. We also take your medical history. Filler adds structure but does not treat fat under the chin or significant sagging, so we will tell you honestly if another concern is driving what you see.

What treatment can and cannot do

Chin & Jawline Sculpting uses dermal filler placed along the jawline and chin to add structure and definition, with a visible change straight away. Some swelling or bruising is common for a few days, and the result settles over about two weeks.

Results vary from person to person and are not permanent, as filler is gradually broken down by the body; how long it lasts depends on the product and on you. Filler does not reduce fat or tighten loose skin. We explain the realistic result, risks and aftercare at your consultation.

Common questions about weak or undefined jawline

Is a weak jawline the same as jowls?

No. A weak or undefined jawline is about the structure of the chin and jaw; jowls are skin and tissue sagging below the jawline with age. They can occur together, but they respond to different treatments, which is why we assess the area first.

Will filler make my jaw look bigger or unnatural?

The aim is balance with the rest of your face, not a dramatic change. The amount and placement are planned around your proportions at consultation, and a conservative approach is usually taken.

Does filler help a double chin?

No. Jawline filler adds structure to the chin and jaw; it does not reduce fat under the chin. If fullness under the chin is part of the concern, we will explain that at your consultation.

How long does it last?

Dermal filler is gradually broken down by the body, so the result is not permanent. How long it lasts depends on the product used and on you, and is discussed at your consultation.

How we decide what’s right

Every plan starts with a consultation. We assess your suitability, discuss your goals and review your medical history before recommending anything — and we will tell you if a treatment isn’t right for you. If a prescription-only treatment may be appropriate, this will be discussed and assessed by an appropriately qualified prescriber before anything is prescribed.
