Long-term hair reduction on the Cutera Excel HR — a dual-wavelength system combining 755nm Alexandrite and 1064nm Nd:YAG lasers, suitable for all skin tones, with sapphire contact cooling for comfort.

Most people looking for long-term hair reduction — suitability is confirmed at consultation. A patch test is required at least 48 hours before the first session.

The laser works by targeting melanin — the pigment in the hair. That makes hair colour, not just skin tone, the thing that decides whether you will get a result.

Skin tone is far less of a barrier here than hair colour: the Cutera excel HR carries both Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths, so we treat across the full range of skin tones. We’ll tell you honestly at your consultation if we don’t think you’ll get a result.

Make the most of your appointment

Before your treatment

  • Shave the area 24 hours before — never wax, thread, pluck or epilate.
  • No sun exposure, sunbeds or tanning for four weeks before.
  • No fake tan for two weeks; every trace must be gone.
  • Stop retinol, Vitamin A and exfoliating acids on the area one week before.
  • No deodorant, oils, moisturiser or perfume on the area for 24 hours.

Tell your practitioner about any recent sun exposure, medication changes or new products — treatment may be postponed if the skin is tanned, irritated or sensitised. Read the full preparation guidance.

After your treatment

  • No heat, hot baths, saunas or strenuous exercise for 48 hours to three days.
  • Don’t rub, pick or scratch, and skip makeup on the area for 24 hours.
  • Stay out of direct sun for two weeks and wear broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily.
  • Let treated hairs shed naturally — shave if you need to, never wax or pluck.
  • Pause retinol, Vitamin A and acids on the area for three days.

Temporary redness, warmth or small bumps around the follicles are normal and settle. Contact us about persistent discomfort, blistering or excessive swelling. Read the full aftercare guidance.

Questions about laser hair removal

What skin tones can be treated?

All of them. Your therapist assesses your skin using the Fitzpatrick scale at your consultation and selects the wavelength and settings accordingly. Deeper skin tones are treated with the 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength, which passes around the melanin in the skin and targets the follicle. Your settings may be adjusted as your course progresses.

What hair colours can be treated?

The laser works by targeting melanin — the pigment in the hair. Dark brown and black hair respond best. Blonde, grey, white and some red hair contain too little melanin for the laser to target and cannot be treated. We'll tell you honestly at your consultation if we don't think you'll get a result.

Does it hurt?

Most clients describe it as a warm snap against the skin — each pulse lasts under a second. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini line are felt more. The sapphire cooling tip on our excel HR cools the skin as it works, which makes the treatment far more comfortable than waxing.

How many sessions will I need?

Courses are available in 1, 3, 6 or 10 sessions. Most areas need a full course to see meaningful reduction — your therapist will recommend the right number for your hair and skin at your consultation. Courses are spaced 4–8 weeks apart, on the face and the body alike. Because hair grows in cycles, each session catches a different set of follicles.

Can I have laser hair removal over a tattoo?

No. We cannot treat over tattooed skin — the ink absorbs laser energy and will burn. We can treat around a tattoo, leaving a 3cm margin.

Can I be treated while pregnant?

No. We don't treat during pregnancy. Laser hair removal is an elective treatment and has never been formally studied in pregnancy, so there's no evidence base to work from. Beyond that, pregnancy hormones actively change your hair growth cycle and make your skin more prone to pigmentation changes — meaning results would be unpredictable and the pigmentation risk higher. We'll happily start your course once you've finished breastfeeding.

What does the consultation cost?

Your Laser Hair Removal Consultation is £50 (patch test included), and it's fully redeemable against any laser hair removal course or Feonix SkinLab product. We use it to assess your skin type, check your medical history, patch test the settings and give you a straight answer on what results you can realistically expect.

What are the side effects?

Temporary redness, warmth and mild swelling around the hair follicles are normal and usually settle within a few hours to a couple of days. Some clients notice mild itching or skin that feels a little like mild sunburn.

Less common reactions include blistering, crusting, or temporary lightening or darkening of the skin — most often where the skin has had recent sun exposure or a tan. This is why we're strict about the pre-treatment rules and why we patch test before we start.

Your risk is assessed individually at your consultation, and your settings are chosen for your skin type. Contact us straight away if you experience persistent discomfort, blistering, excessive swelling or any reaction you weren't expecting.

How soon after treatment can I tan?

Keep the treated area out of direct sun for two weeks after each session, with broad-spectrum SPF 50+ applied daily. Fake tan can be applied from 24 hours after treatment, once the skin has settled.

Bear in mind the flow works both ways: you also need four weeks clear of sun exposure or sunbeds before your next session. If you're planning a holiday, tell us at your consultation and we'll build your course around it rather than cancelling on the day.

What is the minimum age?

The minimum age for laser hair removal is 16, and anyone under 18 needs consent from a parent or legal guardian. That consent can’t be given through the website, so under-18s book by calling us on 0333 772 1277 rather than online. Intimate areas are treated from 18 only.

We generally recommend waiting until after puberty — typically 16 to 18 — for the best results. The hormonal changes during puberty can trigger new hair growth, which makes a course less effective while they’re still settling.
